Telefónica joins FinTech Scotland as Strategic Partner with a shared commitment to responsible AI
FinTech Scotland announced that Telefónica, through Telefónica Tech UK&I, has joined Scotland’s fintech cluster as a Strategic Partner, bringing world-class expertise in artificial intelligence, cloud, and cybersecurity to one of Europe’s fastest-growing fintech ecosystems.
Telefónica, through its Telefónica Tech business unit in the UK and Ireland, is a leading digital transformation provider, which delivers cutting-edge AI, cybersecurity, cloud and IoT solutions to organisations across Europe and the Americas. In the UK and Ireland, the business has a strong presence in Scotland, with offices in Glasgow and Aberdeenshire and hundreds of digital and technology specialists supporting customers across the country.
The partnership comes as FinTech Scotland begins its Financial Regulation Innovation Lab (FRIL) Innovation Challenge on Responsible AI – an initiative bringing together 15 financial and professional services organisations, 14 fintechs and the FCA to explore the challenges surrounding the adoption and responsible use of AI in financial services. Telefónica Tech UK&I will follow the initiative with interest, sharing the conviction that fintech innovation must be built on responsible foundations, and that Scotland is well-positioned to help lead that conversation globally.
Telefónica, through Telefónica Tech UK&I, will also headline sponsor DIGIT’s Financial Technology Summit on 7th October, which is part of the FinTech Scotland Festival 2026, a key event focused on how Scottish fintech innovation drives growth, job creation and global competitiveness.
The partnership takes FinTech Scotland’s network of Strategic Partners to 37, including financial and professional services firms, technology providers, academia and the public sector, all sharing a commitment to advancing innovation across financial services.
Now home to more than 266 fintechs, Scotland’s cluster has more than doubled in five years, underlining its standing as one of Europe’s leading fintech hubs.
Aleks Tomczyk, Chief Executive, FinTech Scotland, said:
“Welcoming Telefónica, through Telefónica Tech UK&I, to our Strategic Partner group is timely. They bring international scale, a dedication to collaboration, deep technical expertise and a genuine commitment to building tech that is not only powerful but responsible. This aligns perfectly with our ethos and our current FRIL Innovation Challenge on responsible AI.
As our ecosystem continues to grow, partnerships like this play a key role in enabling growth and innovation – with the accelerated innovation possible through collaboration a key, embedded differentiator for fintech in Scotland.”
Stephen O’Keane, Advisory Director at Telefónica Tech UK&I, added:
“Scotland’s fintech cluster has built a community where collaboration, growth and responsible innovation go hand in hand. We’re pleased to be joining as a Strategic Partner, and to see the important work being done on responsible AI. We believe technology has a vital role to play in building a better world, and AI is central to that. At Telefónica, our aim is to become the best gateway to digital technologies and we look forward to help shape a responsible and trusted future for the sector.”
